25 November 2021

The Society is seeking expressions of interest for three new members to join our committee, taking on key roles, and is also issuing a call for papers to the journal. See below for details.

New Committee Members

We are currently seeking two editorial assistants and a conference secretary to join the SCA Committee:

Two Editorial Assistants

  • an Editorial Assistant to join the journal's editorial team

  • an Editorial Assistant for book reviews

Please fill out this application form for consideration for either position. The deadline for applications is Friday 10th December 2021. Enquiries and applications should be sent to the editor, Dr Ruth Nugent, at editorchurcharchaeoloy@gmail.com.

Full training will be given, and previous editorial experience is welcome but not required. You do not need to be an active academic (we welcome applications from Independent Researchers), but you should have a keen eye for detail, a methodical approach, and time to work on the journal. We are keen to prioritise those with a background in church studies and/or archaeology and those who would most benefit from gaining editorial experience as part of their career plans, including postgraduates (Masters and PhD), postdoctorals and research assistants, independent researchers, those on temporary/fixed term contracts, and archaeologists working outside academia.

Conference Secretary

The annual SCA conference is held in September, usually over 2.5 days and in a cathedral city, and is an vital part of the Society’s activities. We are seeking a person to take on the role of overseeing organisation of the annual conference and leading a team of committee members to deliver it.

The Conference Secretary would be responsible for:

Friday evening – organising an activity such as a lecture or walking tour

Saturday – arranging a venue, speakers, cathedral tour and evening dinner

Sunday – organising a coach tour of several churches in the vicinity and lunch

Advice and assistance on determining conference themes, speakers, and locations will be provided to the Conference Secretary by the SCA committee. Prior experience of running such events is not necessary, but is welcome. Applicants can come from a range of backgrounds, but should have a keen eye for detail, a methodical approach, and time to work on the arrangements. It would be possible for two Secretaries to share the post, one covering Friday/Saturday, the other the Sunday tour.

Please contact churcharchaeology@gmail.com with enquiries and applications.

Church Archaeology: Call for papers and book reviews

The Society for Church Archaeology is currently running a call for papers and book reviews to be included in its forthcoming issues of the journal. All articles in Church Archaeology are published both in print and available online. The Society welcomes applications relevant to the following criteria:

Main articles (6,000 - 9,000 words): unpublished material, primarily results of recent research, new interpretations or syntheses, original discussions of methodology, conservation issues or technical developments.

Shorter articles (3,000 - 4,500 words): reports of major work in progress (whether fieldwork or research), comment on current philosophies or events, discoveries, conservation issues, individual case studies etc.

News Items (up to 2,000 words): drawing attention to new projects, discoveries, conservation and management issues, events and experiences. Reports on work at individual sites for the journal should be of more than local interest. Alternatively, they can be submitted for the society's newsletter.

Book Reviews (up to 1,500 words): substantial reviews of recently (normally within the last year) published books and brief notices of new books.
